Truro locals set to rally against far-right group

The engineering firm behind the building of the Colchester-East Hants Public Library and the Truro Civic Square will be receiving an honourable mention award for the 2018 Engineers Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in May. The building project saw the creation of the town square as well as the renovation of the 140-year-old Normal College building.

Local citizens are planning a peaceful protest and 'Inclusion Fair' to counter the National Citizens Alliance, when they rally in Truro next week.

Organizers say the NCA is a group that promotes bigotry and intolerance, particularly against Muslim Canadians and non-white immigrants.

"This is the third time that this particular group has tried to get a rally going in Truro," said Joel Henderson, former Chief of Staff to Cumberland-Colchester MP Bill Casey, in a release. "You know what, come on then. We'll see you there."

Henderson said the counter protest at Civic Square on June 27 will "surround the bigots in an embrace of love."

He added the protest will be a non-partisan event and all who believe in Canada as a peaceful, welcoming and tolerant society are welcome to join.

"The myopic, narrow, and intolerant world-view of the NCA is not the Canada we believe in," said Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River MLA Lenore Zann in a Facebook message. "Let our voices ring out and be heard by those who would silence other voices, by not even allowing them to be here."

The Town of Truro says Civic Square is public property and therefore does not have the ability to ban either people or groups who use it, but it does not support the NCA or condone its views.

The Inclusion Fair will be at Civic Square from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on June 27, featuring local artists and musicians, including members of Thrown Together Pottery, who will display their works to the public.

The NCA's rally is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., also on Civic Square.
