Truro Heights man fined for cheating EI

TRURO, N.S. – A Truro Heights man who previously pled guilty to 12 counts of failing to declare income while drawing Employment Insurance benefits was fined $5,400 in provincial court Wednesday.

Shawn Duffy of Anita Crescent was also placed on probation for two years and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service within 20 months.

He was further ordered as part of his probation conditions to take counselling as directed for mental health issues and life skills.

Duffy unsuccessfully ran as a candidate in Colchester County District 2 during the 2016 municipal election.

He pled guilty on Dec. 20, 2017, to 12 counts of failing to declare income on benefits received between Feb. 5 and Sept. 3, 2016.

The fine total was based on $450 for each count.
