A Pictou man has been handed a lifetime prohibition from owning domestic animals and given 18 months to pay fines totaling $2,600.
On Jan. 10, 2018, SPCA officers were called to a residence in Scotsburn owned by David Weatherbee. There they found two dogs without adequate shelter and living in extremely unsanitary conditions. A third dog was found deceased on the property.
Weatherbee has pled guilty to causing an animal to be in distress contrary to sections 21(1) and 22(d) of the Animal Protections Act of NS.
“This case was very sad and disturbing considering the dismal conditions and severe neglect that all of these dogs were left to endure,” wrote Chief Provincial Inspector, Jo-Anne Landsburg in a press release.
The officers seized the two dogs and the third was taken for necropsy at the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture. The spaniel type dog was severely matted, coated in feces. Inside the pen the two dogs had no food and the water left to them was frozen.
In addition to the fines, Weatherbee has been ordered to pay the Nova Scotia SPCA $689.20 in restitution costs.
