SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A 29-year-old Summerside man has pleaded guilty to, among other things, stealing almost $500 worth of meat from grocery stores in Summerside and Charlottetown.

Wayne Joseph Gallant pleaded guilty to two counts of theft under $5,000 from the Atlantic Superstore in Charlottetown, one count of theft under $5,000 from the Atlantic Superstore in Summerside and one count of theft under $5,000 from the Sobeys in Summerside. All four thefts took place in January. The meat stolen included 20 packages of bacon, steaks and roasts and other items.

In addition to the thefts, Gallant pleaded guilty to two counts of breaching his probation and one count of failing to stop a vehicle he was driving when prompted to do so by a police officer,

Gallant was sentenced to serve eight months and ten days in jail, though he received credit for six days he’s spent in custody since his arrest. He must also serve 24 months of probation and is suspended from driving for 12 months. Gallant must also pay restitution to his victims.
