SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ont. — Police say a Nova Scotia man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a woman from eastern Ontario.
Ontario Provincial Police say 26-year-old Emilie Maheu was last seen alive when she left work in Alexandria, Ont., last Thursday afternoon.
She was found dead two days later in nearby South Glengarry Township, and police asked anyone with information to come forward.
Police say 25-year-old Brandon Lucas Smeltzer of Bayside, N.S., was arrested in New Brunswick on Tuesday.
They say he'll appear in court in Cornwall, Ont., but did not give details.
According to the Ottawa Citizen, Maheu has a 22-month-old daughter, who also appears in photos on Smeltzer's Facebook page, and she worked as a secretary at a chiropractic clinic in Alexandria, the town where she grew up.
The paper reported that Maheu "had earlier spent a couple of years in Halifax, where she worked for Mills Heavy Hauling, a trucking and heavy equipment company, as a receptionist and accounts payable clerk. A member of the family-run firm said she returned to Ontario just before her child was born."
In October 2015, Smeltzer pleaded guilty to assaulting a different woman in Bayside and received a conditional discharge with a year’s probation.
