Police are reminding people to lock their vehicles after a rash of thefts in the past month.

Between May 20 and June 13, there were 32 reports of parked vehicles being entered without permission in Lower Sackville and 10 more reports of parked vehicles being entered without permission throughout Halifax District RCMP’s coverage area.

“Many of the vehicles were unlocked at the time and no damage has been reported,” RCMP said in a news release Tuesday. “Numerous valuables and small items were reported missing.”

During the same period, 16 vehicles, including ATVs and motorcycles, were reported stolen in the Halifax District RCMP area.

The RCMP reminded people to remove all valuables from vehicles (including keys, wallets, sunglasses and cash) and to close and lock windows and doors.

“Unfortunately, theft can happen anywhere, even in the friendliest, most tightly knit communities,” said RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jennifer Clarke in the release. “Locking your vehicle isn’t you saying that you don’t trust your neighbours. It’s you saying that you won’t tolerate theft in your neighbourhood.”

Residents are also urged to secure their home, garages and sheds, and to lock away property such as ATVs and tools.
