TRURO, N.S. — Children are being stopped by police around Truro.

Officers are handing out “positive tickets” to young people they see demonstrating safe behaviour such as wearing a helmet while biking. These tickets can be redeemed for a free family swim at Victoria Park Pool.

“I’m out walking most days and I’ll be able to hand these out to kids in places like the skate park and Victoria Park,” said Cst Katie Titus. “This gives us a nice, positive way to interact with young people.”

Tickets will be handed out until the end of August, or until they run out.

Cst Kelly Quinn is covering the downtown area by bicycle again this summer.

“I can cover quite a large area and I’m able to assist with calls and enforce the motor vehicle act,” she said. “I’m focusing quite a bit on people using cell phones while driving. There are still a lot of people doing that.”

The officers said many members of the public find it easier to approach them when they’re on foot or on a bicycle.
