CLARENVILLE, N.L. — The newest street name in Clarenville will remember and honour a late business leader in the community.
At the Tuesday, June 4, Clarenville council meeting, the town approved naming a new road after Corwin Mills, an attorney and partner of Mills, Pittman and Twyne.
Mills passed away in November 2015.
With recent development continuing in the commercial area around Walmart, off Shoal Harbour Drive, council decided it was time to name the street that connects O’Mahony Drive and Coish Place.
Following previous discussion, Coun. Bill Bailey formally suggested Corwin Street or Corwin Avenue at the meeting. He reasoned the street’s location behind Walmart has a unique vantage point of White Hills Ski Resort.
“I’ve been to Corwin’s house hundreds and hundreds of times, and his living room window is looking out at White Hills. He’d constantly look out the window to look and see if it’s snowing,” explained Bailey.
Mills was the epitome of an avid skier and was instrumental with much of the resort's development.
In addition, council agreed to continue a theme for the area of naming roads after important business leaders for Clarenville. Coish Place is named after Bram Coish, and O’Mahoney Drive, for Dr. Albert O’Mahony.
While typically the town doesn’t use first names for designating streets, Mills Place already exists in the community. They decided on Corwin Street to avoid confusion.
The motion was approved unanimously.
Council also reminded the public that if they have ideas for street names, a running list of suggestions is kept to choose from when the need arises.
