UPPER WOODS HARBOUR, NS – Six elementary students are okay after the school bus they were in was hit by a small car while en route to school early Tuesday morning, Jan. 22.
The accident happened at 7:34 a.m. on Highway 3 in the Upper Woods Harbour/Charlesville area.
According to firefighters at the scene, the bus driver saw the car was losing control and stopped the bus in hopes of avoiding the collision, but the car was unable regain control before hitting the bus.
Tanya Forrest, spokeswoman for the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE), said the students who were on the bus were checked out by emergency personnel at the scene.
“We were advised there were no injuries,” she said. “That is what we understand.”
Forrest said another bus was sent for the students.
The students were safely transported to the Evelyn Richardson Memorial Elementary School (ERMES) in Shag Harbour.
According to the RCMP, the female driver of the car was taken to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be minor injuries. Highway 3 was closed while emergency workers were on scene. It has since reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
