Nova Scotians don’t like to be left in the dark.

After post-tropical storm Dorian plaguing the province’s power grid for days in September, it’s no surprise Nova Scotia power outage was the eighth most Googled Canadian news item in 2019.

The popular search, beating out SNC Lavalin and B.C. fugitives in the top 10, is an easy way to find the Nova Scotia Power outage map - a tool Nova Scotians have become familiar with to find outage causes and restoration times.

Google released its 2019 year in search Wednesday morning.

While Nova Scotia Power outage was searched throughout the year, with spikes in more recent months during weather conditions, it was searched the most when post-tropical storm Dorian hit.

Nova Scotia Power outage was mainly searched by Nova Scotians, with some from New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario scattered in the mix.

As Atlantic Canada sat in the crosshairs of Dorian, Maritimers were the driving force behind hurricane Dorian coming in at No. 7 on Google’s Canadian news top 10.

The storm sparked the curiosity of Canadians across the country, who also went on to search National Hurricane Centre, storm track and the Bahamas.

It’s no surprise the Toronto Raptors took the Canadian news title after the team claimed the NBA championship in six over the Golden State Warriors.

People across the country got behind Canada’s only NBA team, with thousands attending Jurassic Park events in Toronto, Halifax and other cities.

Canadian election results, Bianca Andreescu, Don Cherry, Alberta election and Toronto Raptors championship parade slotted spots two to six, respectively, on Google’s Canadian news list.

TOP CANADIAN SEARCHES

It’s evident Canadians love their sports, as the Toronto Raptors, Kawhi Leonard, Bianca Andreescu and Don Cherry nabbed a spot of the top 10 most Googled items by Canadians.

Canadian election results fell behind the NBA team and its star player, sitting at No. 3.

Cameron Boyce and Luke Perry, actors who died in 2019, were the fourth and fifth most Googled items, followed by Game of Thrones, Andreescu, Cherry, Thanos and hurricane Dorian.

TOP RECIPES

Either most Canadians aren’t making their own poutines or they don’t need a recipe for the fry, gravy and cheese curd combo.

Beef stroganoff was the go-to recipe for Canadians, especially in the colder months.

Canadians must like brussel sprouts or be determined to find a way to make the disputed vegetable tasty, as it was the second most Googled recipe.

Coleslaw, banana bread, lasagna, guacamole, fried rice, gnocchi, turkey breast and beef stew rounded out the recipe list.
