DARTMOUTH, N.S. — Halifax Regional Police arrested a man after he barricaded himself at an apartment building in Dartmouth for several hours on Saturday.

At about 11:30 a.m., officers tried to arrest a man at 50 Roleika Dr. on an outstanding warrant, police said in a news release. When police spoke with him, the man made threats toward police and said he was armed with a knife.

The man refused to come out of his apartment, resulting in a large police presence outside the building. Police blocked off Roleika Drive from Caledonia Road and Bryon Crescent as the situation unfolded.

Negotiations continued throughout the afternoon, but the suspect refused to come out.

Every now and then, the suspect, barricaded in a unit on the top floor of the building, would open the window and speak to officers outside. He was also occasionally yelling from inside the unit.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the suspect, who was alone in the unit, lit a fire inside the apartment. Officers entered the unit, arrested the man and extinguished the fire.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 902-490-5020 or Crime Stoppers.

The investigation is ongoing.
