ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — It seems police believe Lucas Dawe might have had human remains stolen from a Conception Bay South cemetery since late 2017.
When the case was called in provincial court in St. John’s Wednesday, Dawe pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing property stolen from All Saints’ Parish in Foxtrap, as well as interfering with human remains.
His trial is scheduled for July 6.
But before the trial date was set, Crown prosecutor Jessica Gallant told the judge the dates of those counts are being amended to indicate the offences allegedly occurred between Nov. 5, 2017 and April 5, 2019.
Dawe, who is represented by Ken Hollett, appeared via video link from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.
The 20-year-old was arrested after police responded to a call for service in the T’Railway area of Foxtrap on April 6.
Officers located human remains, which the RNC’s major crime unit, working with the province’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, determined were “quite old” and not related to any current missing person cases.
The Telegram learned the skeletal remains date back to the 1800s.
Sources also told The Telegram Dawe allegedly boiled the bones and drank some of the water. He was reportedly seen licking them as well.
Dawe pleaded guilty to breaching court orders from Feb. 9, 2019.
Meanwhile, Hollett indicated Dawe would plead guilty to unrelated charges — three counts of theft under $5,000 from a Circle K store in C.B.S. on Jan. 28 and 29, as well as breaching court orders.
Dawe is due back in court May 30 to deal with those charges.
