WENTWORTH CREEK, N.S. — Davey Woods didn’t think twice when he waded through water to help with the search efforts to find two missing Hants County girls in mid-November.

His efforts were recognized during West Hants’ committee of the whole meeting Nov. 26.

Warden Abraham Zebian commended Woods for the role he played on Nov. 18.

Zebian said “two very curious, little girls” wandered off in Brooklyn, causing quite a panic as first responders and volunteers tried to locate them.

“It was Mr. Davey Woods here who went above and beyond to try to find them,” said Zebian.

“He found them cold, wet. He jumped in water, not thinking about himself and only thinking about saving two little girls. So, Davey, you epitomize everything that we stand for — you're the best of everything.”

Zebian presented Woods with a certificate of appreciation from the municipality as well as new boots and a cellphone, to replace the items that were damaged the day of the rescue.

Zebian commended Woods’ selfless act and told him to keep up the good work.

Staff Sgt. Cory Bushell, of the Windsor District RCMP, said the local detachment received a call at 10:58 a.m. that two girls attending Brooklyn Elementary School had not returned to class at the end of recess.

He said all indications were that they were within the area of the school and search efforts began.

“They were located behind the Brooklyn arena,” said Bushell in an interview.

The girls had “had fallen into the water as a result of where they were walking.”

Upon being located by Woods, they had to be taken back across the water to get to safety, Bushell said.

“They had minor scrapes and bruises, as well as some cold from exposure.”

The girls were found approximately an hour and a half after they were reported missing.

Bushell commended the efforts of all those involved in the successful search, and highlighted Woods’ contributions.

“We’re extremely grateful to Mr. Woods for his efforts in assisting us in locating the girls and... (helping) to retrieve them from the water. It was through his efforts we were able to bring the girls to safety in a timely manner.”
