A natural gas leak prompted an evacuation of part of Burnside Industrial Park on Saturday afternoon.

A long stretch of Akerley Boulevard was closed and evacuated at about 1 p.m.

"Heritage Gas has responded to a report of a gas leak in Burnside," the company said in a tweet at about 1:30 p.m. "The leak was quickly stopped and Heritage Gas personnel are working with HRM Fire to restore normal vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area."

The company didn't say what caused the leak.

Halifax Regional Police said the fire department requested their help in blocking vehicle and pedestrian traffic at 1 p.m. for the leak that occurred in the 0-50 block of Akerley.

"Shortly before 2:00 p.m., Heritage Gas and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency advised Police that the gas leak was resolved and all traffic could be opened," HRP said in a news releasee at 2:20 p.m.

Fire department and traffic trackers on Twitter said streets were closed from Windmill Road to Zatzman Drive and that a hazardous materials team was on the scene.
