TRURO, N.S. — Big Brothers Big Sisters Colchester is taking action to help a very special woman.
In 2018, Angie Parker Brown was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
Angie is a single mom of twin daughters, Parker and Paris. The girls are both Little Sisters in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Colchester’s Community Matching Program. On July 20 and 21 a portion of the sales made at Fundy Scoops Dairy Bar in North River will go towards the purchase of an accessible van for Angie, who says having the vehicle will allow her to enjoy more outings and experiences with her girls.
“We have been working hard to fundraise for the purchase of the van,” said Angie. “I want to be able to get out, have experiences with Parker and Paris, and share memories together with them while I still can.”
Not only will Fundy Scoops be donating a portion of their sales for the day, but it has also created a special promotion/donation for the fundraiser. “The Twin Cone” includes two scoops of your choice for $10 with all the proceeds going to Angie. Parker and Paris’s pick for the Twin Cone is Mint Chocolate Chip and Birthday Cake.
“The quality of life of our Littles and their families is of the utmost importance to us,” said Nick Sharpe, executive director with BBBS. “We know that this time Angie and her girls have together is the most valuable thing in the world to them. We hope this will help to ensure they can focus on spending that time together the way they want and need.”
Anyone who knows Angie knows she is an incredibly positive, warm and kind person. Even with the ALS diagnosis, Angie’s focus remains is making her daughter’s lives as special and memorable as possible. The accessible van will give them the freedom to help make that happen.
“I’ve had incredible support from this community,” said Angie. “Funds raised so far have allowed me to make renovations to my home such as widening my doorways, the addition of a wheelchair accessible shower, and a ramp to my front door.”
Parker and Paris both had fundraisers at their school, and friends of Angie’s have also organized events. There is currently a Go Fund Me Page for Angie, who is getting closer to reaching her financial need for the van.
Come and join us for ice cream goodies - ice cream cone, sundae, milkshake, or the “Give your Dog a Cone” treat - on July 20 and 21 between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The girls and their Bigs, Maggie Sutherland and Mary Archibald, will be popping by Saturday afternoon to help scoop ice cream. If you ask, they might suggest the “Twin Cone”, perhaps with Birthday Cake and Mint Chocolate Chip!
