CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. woman who stabbed a stranger’s car window and tried to pry a door open with the knife was sentenced Wednesday to 60 days in jail.

Katie Brianna Brewer, 23, appeared before Judge John Douglas in provincial court in Charlottetown where she pleaded guilty to resisting arrest, theft from a Sobeys and breaching her probation.

Brewer previously pleaded guilty to damaging property and possessing a knife for a dangerous purpose.

Crown attorney Chad McQuaid told the court that on Aug. 15 at around 12:40 a.m., Charlottetown police responded to a call about Brewer trying to get into her victim’s vehicle.

The court heard the victim was picking up a friend and waiting in her vehicle when Brewer approached holding a knife.

McQuaid said Brewer started stabbing at the vehicle’s driver-side windows and tried to pry one of the doors open with the knife.

The victim honked the horn and drove around to pick up her friend who had come outside.

During a previous appearance before Douglas, the court heard Brewer walked away after seeing the victim and saying she thought the woman was someone else.

On Wednesday, McQuaid also read an agreed statement of facts related to an Oct. 13 theft from a Sobeys, which Brewer committed after her arrest and release on an undertaking from previous matters.

McQuaid told the court Brewer went to a Sobeys store where she stole several items, including pizza, chicken and ground beef.

She was still at the store when the police arrived and the court heard that as they tried to put her in a vehicle, Brewer got a piece of paper off the floor and started a fire.

McQuaid said the police had to subdue Brewer who spit at and tried to kick them.

Intoxicated

Defence lawyer Alex Dalton told the court Brewer was intoxicated by alcohol during the knife incident and doesn’t remember all of it.

Brewer didn’t know the victim and apologized, Dalton said.

The court heard Brewer was under the influence of drugs when she committed the theft, and Dalton said she didn’t remember all of that incident either.

Douglas gave Brewer credit of 26 days for time spent in custody since her arrest, leaving her a total of 34 days still to serve on all of the charges.

She will serve the sentence on weekends, must pay more than $1,500 in restitution and will be under a five-year weapons prohibition.
