Nova Scotia Power is warning about a new phone scam, where customers hear a recording stating their account is overdue.

Calls appear to come from the company’s customer care centre and the message instructs people to call another phone number to arrange payment or risk disconnection of their power. The message states payment can be made in many forms, including by gift cards.

Nova Scotia Power said it would not issue an ultimatum to customers on first contact and does not accept gift cards as payment.

People who are suspicious about a call claiming to be from the utility are encouraged to call the customer care centre at 1-800-428-6230.

Anyone who has provided personal information after receiving one of these calls should contact their financial institution and local police.
