SYDNEY, N.S. — Not guilty pleas have been entered and a preliminary hearing date assigned to a mother and her three daughters charged in connection with a $3.6-million fraud.
Charged are Lydia Saker, 74, of Shore Road, Sydney Mines; and her daughters, Georgette Young, 47, of Stanley Street, Sydney; Angela MacDonald, 45, of Terra Nova Drive, Kentville; and Nadia Saker, 43, of Leitches Creek.
The four accused and 10 companies which they owned and operated are facing 30 counts of fraud totalling $3,628.805. The offences are alleged to have occurred between January 2011 and July 2015.
The charges allege the family filed false or deceptive claims under the federal Goods and Services Tax.
Lydia Saker and Young are represented by lawyers while MacDonald and Nadia Saker are representing themselves.
If ordered to trial after the preliminary, all four have elected to be tried in Supreme Court before a judge and jury.
A two-day preliminary hearing is now scheduled to begin March 30.
