A 50-year-old Avonport man charged with trying to kill his father by slicing his neck open with a knife has been sent for a 30-day psychiatric assessment.

Timothy Butler will be back in court Aug. 22 after the assessment, which will try to determine his fitness to stand trial and his criminal responsibility at the time of the attack Sunday morning.

He accused of getting on top of his sleeping father in a New Minas home, punching him in the head and slicing at his neck with a knife.

RCMP were called after a neighbour reported a disturbance at about 7 a.m. The accused was found on foot in the area and arrested without incident. His father was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries and later released.
