KENTVILLE, N.S. — A Lower Sackville man who pleaded guilty to stealing a defibrillator from Acadia University has been sentenced in Kentville provincial court.
Todd Ellis, 46, of Lower Sackville, was present in court in custody on Feb. 19. His matters were put off to the following day for a bail hearing but Ellis pleaded guilty on Feb. 20 to charges of stealing a defibrillator of a value not exceeding $5,000 from Acadia University and failing to comply with his recognizance by failing to keep the peace and to be of good behaviour by committing theft. Ellis committed the offences in Wolfville on Feb. 8.
Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Ellis to 15 days in custody for stealing the defibrillator and 15 days in custody – to be served concurrently – for failing to comply with his recognizance.
Ellis was identified by a member of the public after the RCMP released images of two suspects in the defibrillator theft. The two men were captured on security footage taking the machine from Acadia’s Beveridge Arts Centre. The defibrillator was returned to the university on Feb. 14.
Facing other charges
Ellis is scheduled to stand trial on several unrelated charges on June 24. These include stealing a Czech VZ 258 Small Arms Sporter, the property of Hnatiuk’s Hunting and Fishing Supplies, of a value not exceeding $5,000; possessing a firearm without being the holder of a licence under which he may possess it; possessing a firearm knowing he was not the holder of a licence under which he may possess it; being an occupant in a vehicle in which he knew there was a firearm at the time; possessing a restricted weapon knowing that it was stolen property; transporting a firearm in a careless manner; transporting a restricted firearm in a manner contrary to the Firearms Act by not rendering it inoperable; and carrying a concealed weapon while not being authorized under the Firearms Act to do so.
It’s alleged that Ellis committed these offences in Lantz on Nov. 5, 2018. These charges have not been proven in court.
