TRURO, N.S. – A construction worker was killed Wednesday afternoon when a concrete wall collapsed at the site of a home renovation project in Truro.
The name of the victim is not being released.
Tom LeBlanc, Northern Region director for Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety, said workers were preparing to “wrap a foundation to fix some leaks and the wall gave way and fell on the employee.”
Emergency services were called to the East Prince Street site, shortly before 2 p.m.
“Right now we have a stop work order on any further work until we can get an investigator in to have a look,” LeBlanc said. “The investigation is continuing and we will be delving deeper into it tomorrow.”
Blois Currie, chief of the Truro Fire Department, said his members had to use their hydraulically-powered rams and cribbing to lift and stabilize the wall before freeing the victim.
“It was a section of concrete wall maybe 20-feet long by six-feet high and a foot and a half thick,” he said. “We had to get the wall off and make it safe for our members to get (the victim) out.”
Evidence of excavation work was visible on one side of the older-style home.
