TRURO, N.S. — There have been a few delays, but work is continuing at the site of the old jail.

“Things are going fairly well,” said developer Darren Rodgers. “We’re waiting for Nova Scotia Power to remove poles now.

“We plan to pour foundation in August.”

Rodgers, of Nine Mile River, has a development agreement with the Town of Truro to construct a 35-unit four-storey residential building, and a four-storey building containing 30 dwelling units plus commercial space. The old jail will become recreation space, with two residential units.

“We’ve opened it up a lot in the building,” said Rodgers. “The bones are solid concrete and brick.”

An older two-storey, four-unit building at 209 Queen St. and a two-storey, two-unit building at 211 Queen St. were demolished to make space for the project.

The town entered into an agreement for the development in 2015 and timing extensions have been allowed.

Permits obtained in January 2019 require Phase 1construction to be substantially completed within 18 months. Phase 1 is for construction of the mixed-use building.

“Timelines are being met,” said Jason Fox, director of planning and development for Truro. “The developer has applied for necessary permits and has architectural drawings.”

Phases 2 and 3 are to be substantially completed by Sept. 15, 2023.
