BRACKLEY BEACH, P.E.I. — A major fire at the North Winds Inn and Suites in Brackley Beach has destroyed a portion of the motel but is now contained.
The fire appears to have broken out at around 4 p.m. and was contained by 6:30 p.m.
Firefighters were at the scene battling the blaze, which sources said destroyed most of a standalone building of suites behind the main inn.
According to media reports, one guest was treated for minor burns, but there were no other injuries.
The North Shore, North River and New Glasgow fire departments all sent firefighters to battle the blaze.
Portions of Brackley Point Road, Portage Road and Winsloe Road were all temporarily closed.
A plume of smoke was visible from several kilometres away, including at Stanhope Beach, about 12 km to the east.
The Guardian was unable to reach members of the fire department, most of whom still were at the scene.
Several people took to social media with photos and videos of the fire:
Scary and all of our stuff is still there. Not sure when we’ll be able to get it, hoping we can get stuff tonight and no damage! pic.twitter.com/72FzYV3gCY
