TRURO, N.S. — The United Way of Colchester launched both its annual Local Love giving campaign and the #UNIGNORABLE campaign in September.
Local Love promotes giving and #UNIGNORABLE encourages people to address core issues affecting local communities. United Way wants to draw attention to the social issues that hold too many people back.
Terry Hearn, executive director of the United Way of Colchester, said poverty goes beyond income. “It’ hunger and it’s homelessness, it’s education inequality, unemployment and social isolation. It’s mental illness and domestic violence,” she said. “All are impacted by poverty. Our neighbours, including one in five children, are struggling and we need to help them.”
Raj Makkar and Dr. Ryan Sommers have returned as campaign co-chairs and encourage people to help reach the fundraising goal of $285,000.
During the Sept. 18 launch, Colchester County Mayor Christine Blair, a former board chair, presented the Top Workplace Award to Intertape Polymer, and the Top Corporate Award to Community Credit Union.
