TRURO, N.S. — Hands, heads and hearts are being warmed through a program run by the Truro branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Mittens, gloves, scarves, socks, hats, headbands, neck warmers were handed over to the RCMP and Truro Police, to be distributed where needed throughout the community.

“This is the fourth year for this, and we went from having 40 items the first year to 342 this year,” said Grant O’Laney, immediate past president of the Truro branch of the Legion. “The idea came from the Legion in Halifax and we’re really happy with the success here.”

Legion members, friends and family donated by hand knit and store-bought items, and this year the Colchester Community Workshop also collected items.

“It’s important to give back to the community and this is a way we can give back and help people,” said past president Gerry Tucker.

There are plans to hold another collection next winter, and items for it can be dropped off at the Legion any time.
