TRURO, N.S. — Alex Bailey never thought for one second he would win a million dollars.

But when the Truro resident learned he’d bought the lucky $1 million Twist ticket, he described the moment as “amazing.”

“I’m excited, happy and disbelieving,” said Bailey. “We’ve got some bills to pay off and we owe our kids a trip to Disneyland.”

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation said Jan. 21 the winning ticket was bought in the Truro area. Bailey saw the news on Facebook but finished his shift at Stanfields before deciding to check his ticket.

Three days later, Bailey and his wife Angela visited Halifax to be formally presented with their prize.

Angela, who works at a daycare centre in Bible Hill, had the same disbelieving reaction as her husband when she learned about the big win.

“He’s kind'a a prankster,” said Angela. “It took me a while to believe him when he called me at work and told me … it’s still so overwhelming.”

However, Angela was eventually convinced this was no prank and said she “cried in happiness.”

For Bailey and his family, their million-dollar win was exactly what they needed, owing to recent financial difficulties.

However, both Bailey and Angela will continue going to work and live their lives as normal, their newfound wealth notwithstanding.

“I think we’re going to fix up our house a little bit and see what happens next,” said Bailey.

Twist is an add-on game for Lotto Max tickets that’s only available in Atlantic Canada. Players can typically win up to $100,000 on Twist, but thanks to the Twist 10X Tuesdays promotion, the prize grew to $1 million.

The Twist 10X Tuesdays promotion, available for every Tuesday Lotto Max draw in January, applies a 10-times multiplier to all Twist prizes. Tuesday, Jan. 28 will be the final draw for this promotion.

Bailey’s win is the fourth major Lotto Max prize claimed in Atlantic Canada already this year. Two prizes of $500,000 on Maxmillions were claimed in New Brunswick. A third $389,696.60 main draw prize was also claimed in N.B.

One more Maxmillions prize worth $500,000 was sold in Gloucester County, N.B. for the Jan. 7 draw, but the winner has not yet come forward.

Bailey purchased his winning ticket at a Needs store in Millbrook First Nation. The retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.

But Colchester County has one more as-yet unknown winner of a $100,000 Tag lottery ticket, who has not yet claimed their prize.
