TRURO, N.S. — An overflow crowd greeted Justin Trudeau when he made a stop in Truro on Wednesday evening to kick off Liberal candidate Lenore Zann’s campaign.
Those who were inside cheered, took photos and shook hands with the Liberal leader as he slowly made his way to the platform, where he joined Zann, current Cumberland-Colchester MP Bill Casey, and other politicians. About two dozen people stood outdside the doors listened.
Trudeau said the Liberal Party has made significant achievements.
“Over the past four years we did more than just grow the economy,” he said. “We did more to protect our environment than any other government in the history of this country, with a one-and-a-half-billion-dollar ocean protection plan, with a ban on toxic single use plastic, with an accelerated phasing out of coal plants, with historic protection for our land and marine areas.”
He defended the carbon tax.
“The Conservatives want to make pollution free again but by putting a price on pollution we’re actually returning more money into the pockets of hard-working Canadians. We’ve had to bring in the federal climate plan because the Conservatives haven’t wanted to move forward. Canadians are better off with a price on pollution than they would be if the Conservatives got their way and made pollution free again.”
He also mentioned Liberal plans to double the investment in early learning and child care by ensuring that more people can access after school spaces for school-age children and by increasing the child benefit by 15 per cent for children under the age of one.
Zann was NDP MLA for Truro-Bible Hill from 2009 till June. She sat as an independent for her last few months as MLA. Casey announced last year that he wouldn’t be reoffering in the upcoming federal election.
