“We’re hoping by then everything will be back to normal, but until then we want to try and do something to help young people get to the ski hill,” she said.
Although intended to make up for the loss of school visits, anyone can take advantage of the busing option.
The busses will depart Truro and Amherst at 3:30 p.m., reach Ski Wentworth about 4:15 p.m. and will leave the hill at 8:30 p.m. Tickets should be purchased online the day before.
Wilson says a Ski Wentworth staff member will be on the bus, but parents should be aware the trip is unsupervised and participants will be skiing on their own after leaving the bus.
The Nova Scotia Teachers Union directed teachers to work-to-rule in December, which includes not taking part or organizing extra curricular activities like skating at local rinks or trips to the ski hill.
Wilson says schools trips account for as many as 3,500 to 4,000 visits to the hill every winter.
“That’s everything from classes in the day and race teams practicing at night,” she said. “Certainly mid-week school visits make up a significant part of our business. This could have a significant impact.”
Wilson says the labour dispute is also affecting the broader community, for example in terms of employment.
“If it continues, it could have an effect on our staffing levels,” said Wilson. “If we don’t have people coming into the cafeteria to eat, if the Bunny Hill isn’t full of students, then staff might get less hours.”
Ski Wentworth employs as many as 150 people, full and part time, on the busiest weekends.
