Since the RCMP shootings in Moncton on Wednesday, the Colchester District RCMP has seen an outpouring of love and condolences from local residents, Cpl. Addie Maccallum told the Truro Daily News on Friday.

“Flowers and home baking, cards and fruit baskets are here at the Bible Hill office,” said Maccallum of the kindness expressed by Colchester County residents, which has been greatly appreciated. “Support has been amazing … condolences for lost members in Moncton and (residents) saying thank you to all (law enforcement) members.”

Maccallum said a book of condolence for Moncton RCMP has been placed at the Bible Hill and Tatamagouche detachments for the public to sign. The books will be taken to the Codiac detachment next week.

There are no current plans for a tribute service locally, said Maccallum, “because the memorial in Moncton is still up in the air. We don’t want to steal the spotlight … we’ll have a better idea early next week” what may happen locally.

Maccallum also said some of the Colchester RCMP members have returned from their post in Moncton but there’s a “strong possibility” more will be sent back. He couldn’t speak about the specifics of their assistance.

Truro Police Service’s Inspector Rob Hearn also confirmed people have dropped off fruit baskets and cards of condolence for Moncton, as well as appreciation to police forces, to Truro police.

“We will send good representation” to the Moncton memorial service, Hearn said.
