Byers received 1,665 votes, with incumbent Susan MacQuarrie taking 564 votes.

“I am very excited about it and surprised at the numbers that came out to vote,” she said. “I looking forward to it as a new challenge.”

Byers has 24 years of municipal government experience, representing Colchester County and the Town of Truro. She has been on many boards including the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities and Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and was deputy mayor of Truro.

“I believe the door-to-door campaign gave me a wonderful opportunity to get to know some of the issues,” she said. “I appreciate the good campaign from Susan.

“I have an interest in education and I’m happy to be part of the system and be a listener and problem solver. I will be doing my best for the children and I think it’s going to be very interesting.”
