Residents feel the loss of Bible Hill’s walk-in clinic

Plans were for the Care-Now walk-in clinic in Bible Hill to close for the summer, but because of a doctor shortage it will not be able to reopen at all.

BIBLE HILL, N.S. —

The loss of the Bible Hill walk-in health clinic has created a major gap in personal health care for some people.
“I took my father there because he’s 85 years old and has no doctor,” said Sheri Richards. “My father has the beginning of dementia, needs puffers and uses a wheelchair.
“It’s hard to get him out of the house, but the clinic was near his home so I could get him there. If I take him up to the hospital I can’t get him to sit for hours. The clinic was great because you booked a time and knew when to be there.”
Her father hasn’t had a family doctor for a year, so he visited the clinic regularly.
"The doctors at the clinic were really good. They would listen and look at information and do their best to help people.”
The Care-Now walk-in clinic, which was located at the Bible Hill MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave, had closed for the summer because physicians who had been working there retired or moved away. There were hopes that it could reopen this month but, due to a shortage of doctors, that hasn’t been possible.
Laura MacKenzie had gone to the clinic for care because she hasn’t been able to find a doctor since moving to the area more than a year ago.
“I often saw people there with young children,” she said. “I wonder if they’re going to end up waiting in the emergency department now, with sick or restless children.”
She noted there will also be more people trying to get appointments at the Truro Walk-In clinic, making wait times there longer.
“This is going to make it difficult for my father and a lot of other people," said Richards. “I don’t know what to do now. Bible Hill needs to have something in place.”
