Health Canada has issued a recall warning on a brand of bagged kale salad sold in Atlantic Canada.
The recall of the 794-gram (28 ounce) Eat Smart Sweet Kale Vegetable Salad Bag Kit made by Fresh Taste Produce Ltd. was prompted by a Canadian Food Inspection Agency test result that found possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The product is sold by various retailers in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick as well as in Ontario.
Codes on the product are JUL 17 2019, 2019 JL 17, and 2 00 183, using the UPC 7 09351 89140 3.
Health Canada says food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick.
Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
Thus far, there are no reported illnesses as a result of consumption.
Health Canada says recalled products should be tossed out or returned to the store where it was purchased.
