TRURO, N.S.

An eight-year member of the RCMP has been charged with assault and uttering threats against a woman.

Cst. Gregory Whalen, 47, of Bible Hill, is to appear in provincial court in Truro on Wednesday to answer to the charges.

They stem from an investigation by the province’s Serious incident Response Team (SiRT) following allegations of assault made by a female to the Colchester District RCMP on Oct. 20.

Although the incident is alleged to have occurred in Bible Hill, the officer who has been charged does not work out of the Bible Hill detachment.

John Scott, interim director for SiRT, said in a news release issued Monday that seven police officers were interviewed during the investigation, and written notes were provided by another officer.

Other evidence related to the matter was also collected and reviewed, he said.

“This investigation has led to the conclusion that there are sufficient grounds to lay charges of assault and uttering threats against Cst. Gregory Whalen,” Scott said, in the release. “However, since this matter is currently before the courts and in accordance with SiRT policy, this report will not discuss the facts of that matter in any further detail. To do otherwise might compromise the fair trial interests of the accused.”
