TRURO, N.S. — If you have a bird feeder and a few minutes a week to spare, you can help provide a picture of bird health in Canada.

Birds Canada and Cornell Lab of Ornithology run Project FeederWatch Nov. 9-April 3, and participants provide information on the birds they see around their homes.

Several species have experienced changes during the past few years. The numbers of birds of prey have increased since the use of DDT was banned in the 1970s, and the northern cardinal has expanded its range, but there has been a large decline in the number of evening grosbeaks.

People can join Project FeederWatch in Canada by making a donation to Birds Canada. They will receive a poster of common feeder birds, a calendar, last season’s results, and access to online data tools.

More information can be found online at birdscanada.org/feederwatch or
