Be on the lookout for the Mounties this week on Nova Scotia roads.

The RCMP will mark Canada Road Safety Week with checkpoints targeting the leading causes of vehicle collisions such as impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and improper seat belt use.

The week includes National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day on Saturday.

“Canada Road Safety Week and National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day are reminders that everyone has a role to play in keeping roads safe,” said Staff Sgt. Jeff West of the Nova Scotia RCMP in a news release Tuesday. “When you wear your seatbelt, drive sober, stay focused and travel at safe speeds, you’re more likely to arrive home safely and so is everyone around you.”

Nova Scotia RCMP responded to 10 collisions linked to impaired driving in which someone was seriously injured or killed between Jan. 1 and April 30. In the same period, Nova Scotia RCMP charged 139 people with impaired driving and five people were charged after they refused to participate in sobriety testing.

Police test suspected impaired drivers with equipment that measures alcohol or drug levels in the breath, saliva or through blood samples done by a medical professional.

Nova Scotia RCMP will be sharing road safety tips this week through Twitter (https://twitter.com/RCMPNS) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/rcmpns/).
