TRURO, N.S. – A man who attempted to conceal himself in a pile of clothing couldn’t fool a Truro police service dog and was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant Tuesday.

Christopher MacKenzie, 38, had been wanted by RCMP and was apprehended by Truro Police Service.

“We had an idea where he was today and we executed a warrant on an apartment here in Truro and we found him hiding inside the apartment,” Truro Police Inspector Rob Hearn said, moments after the arrest at about 3:30 p.m.

RCMP in Moncton, N.B., issued an arrest warrant in December for MacKenzie, on a parole violation. RCMP said MacKenzie had breached the conditions laid down for him after he was released from a federal correctional facility in New Brunswick. He had been serving a two-year term for trafficking hydromorphone.

MacKenzie was found in a Queen Street apartment complex by the police service dog after officers executed a search warrant at the residence.

“We brought our dog in and the dog found him … in a room that had clothes about three feet high throughout the whole room,” Hearn said. MacKenzie was also partly concealed by a couch that was turned over in the room, in the midst of the pile of clothes, he said.

Hearn said MacKenzie is well known to Truro police. “We’ve busted him many times for drugs,” he said.

MacKenzie was being held in custody, pending further action.
