ENFIELD, N.S. — A 22-year-old man is facing several charges after a vehicle sped away from police and a suspect later fled on foot.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, a member of East Hants District RCMP stopped a vehicle, with two men inside, on Hwy. 2 for a traffic violation. As the officer was nearing the driver's window, the car sped off, causing the officer to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. The vehicle nearly struck two other vehicles as it left.

A description of the vehicle was shared with other officers, and it was spotted about 20 minutes later, near apartment buildings on Hwy. 277 in Lantz. One of the suspects had run down towards a river behind Preepers Lane, and police spotted him climbing out of the river on the other side. He was arrested and taken to East Hants RCMP detachment. The second suspect was not located.

The suspect was searched, and drugs and drug paraphernalia were seized.

A 22-year-old from Meagher's Grant was held overnight and served summary offence tickets for displaying a cancelled number plate, operating a vehicle without registration, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, and driving while his licence was revoked. He is scheduled to appear in Truro Provincial Court on April 5 on these charges.

He is also facing charges under the Criminal Code and Cannabis Control Act: Flight from a peace officer (2 counts), dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He is scheduled to appear on May 13 in Shubenacadie Provincial Court on these charges.

The RCMP is attempting to learn the identity of the second occupant of the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact East Hants District RCMP at 902-883-7077.
