TRURO, N.S. — Truro public works employees got a surprise Wednesday morning when they discovered a five-foot snake in a catch basin off Faulkner and Muir Streets.

The snake was dead when it was found on May 15.

"It just got there within the last week because the catch basin was cleaned a week ago," said Andrew MacKinnon, director of public works. "It's the first time, that I'm aware of, that something like this has been found in town."

He said they called the SPCA for direction about what to do with the body and were referred to the Dal AC lab, where staff told them to bury it.

"We don't know what it is for sure, but from feedback we're getting most people think it's a red tail boa," he said. "Our guess it died and somebody dumped it there, or it could have been a pet that got loose and died."

Boas would be unable to survive in the temperatures in Truro during the past week.
