TRURO, N.S. - Cold winds and rain couldn’t stop the festivities during Friday evening’s tree lighting in Truro.
Hundreds of people gathered in Civic Square, bundled up in winter clothing to ring in the Christmas season and light up the square during the town’s annual Festival of Lights.
Volunteers from Sobeys Prince Street and the Bible Hill Kinsmen served free hot chocolate to help warm up those participating in the festival, while members of VON Canada gave away free cake in celebration of their 120th year.
A parade of decorated first responder vehicles paraded down Prince Street, blaring their sirens and flashing their lights as they made their way past the square.
Although there were no stars out, the Truro Concert Band lightened up the mood by performing a handful of classic Christmas songs and carols.
Unfortunately, high winds throughout the day meant the traditional fireworks could not be set up, but that didn’t stop the fun as Mayor Bill Mills led the crowd in a countdown before lighting the tree.
As the tree lit up, the band played ‘O Christmas Tree’ to finish off the night, just as a light dusting of snow fell from the sky.
