Cumberland-Colchester MP-elect Bill Casey is welcoming a Canada Post decision to halt its installation of community mailboxes.

“Canada Post seems to have had a change of heart since the election and I welcome this new position,” Casey said Monday night.

In July, Casey, who was then the Liberal candidate, wrote the president and CEO of Canada Post asking him to suspend the conversion from home delivery to community mailboxes but didn’t get a reply.

Casey had questioned why Colchester County was one of the communities targeted for conversion when it had a high percentage of veterans, seniors and the disabled. While it wasn’t targeted, Casey said Cumberland County also has a high percentage of these groups.

In a news release earlier Monday, Canada Post spokeswoman Anik Losier said the corporation will work co-operatively with the new Liberal government to determine the best path forward considering the challenges faced by the postal system.

The decision involves 460,000 addresses that are currently in the process of conversion.
