TRURO, N.S. —
A broken water pipe resulted in the loss of food destined to keep feral cats fed this winter. A pipe in the bathroom at a storage facility burst and all dry food sitting on the floor was destroyed.
“The landlord called and told us the tenant upstairs heard water running,” said Patsy Forrest Oxner, chair of the Colchester chapter of Carma Cat Rescue. “When a couple of volunteers got there, they found four to five inches of water on the floor and dry food floating everywhere.
“There was some stored in totes, but we usually use totes to make winter shelters for the cats.”
Dry food is distributed to caregivers who ensure feral cats, who have been spayed and neutered to prevent their numbers from increasing, don’t go hungry.
Paper towels, and books that were being saved for a sale, were also ruined in the flood.
“Blankets got wet, but they can be washed,” said Forrest Oxner. “We’re going to put more shelves in and get more totes to protect everything from now on. We were in the process of getting renters’ insurance, but it wasn’t finalized.”
Carma issued an appeal for donations of food and money to replenish supplies. Bags of dry cat food can be dropped off at Truro Vet Hospital, 165 Arthur Street. Monetary donations can be e-transferred to [email protected]. Any brand of food can be used, but kitten food is especially helpful in providing the animals with the calories needed during cold weather.
