SPRINGHILL, N.S. — The demolition of historic All Saints Anglican Church in Springhill has begun.
Crews from Baxter Trucking and Excavation were in Springhill on Tuesday removing the steeple from the historic church that was slated for demolition last year.
Speaking to the Amherst News last fall, rector Rev. Dr. Brian Spence said the decision to remove the 126-year-old church was “difficult and very sad,” but something that’s being faced by communities across the country.
The congregation, that numbers between 30 and 40 regular members, moved into the adjacent parish hall on a full-time basis last year. The church was deconsecrated during a ceremony several weeks ago.
Part of the decision to remove the church was the need of a new roof, something that would cost more than $70,000 and that wouldn’t address the continued maintenance of the building.
The building was built in 1892 and its design is based on plans by renowned Prince Edward Island architect William Critchlow Harris.
The decision to demolish the church was the conclusion of a process that took approximately 18 months and included a discussion with the congregation.
