Cobequid Educational Centre announces Governor General's and Queen Elizabeth Medal recipients

CEC presented Joel Richards with the 2018 Queen Elizabeth medal and Kathryn MacQuarrie with the Governor General's Medal. Although they graduated in June, the medals couldn't be presented at that time because final marks for IB students aren't available until late summer.

Two former Cobequid Educational Centre students were presented with prestigious medals while they were home for the holidays.

On Dec. 19, Kathryn MacQuarrie was presented with the 2018 Governor General’s Medal and Joel Richards was given the Queen Elizabeth Medal.

The medals have previously been awarded during graduation ceremonies, but there is a directive stating they must be based on final grades, and final IB grades are not available until late summer.

The Governor General’s Medal, established in 1873, recognizes the student who has achieved the highest academic average based on their final grade 11 and 12 marks.  Kathryn MacQuarrie scored 44 out of a possible 45 on her final IB Exams, giving her an average of 98.8 per cent.

The Queen Elizabeth II Medal is awarded to the graduating student who has demonstrated superior achievement in studies during the last three years of school and has achieved an outstanding record in school and community involvement.
