AMHERST, N.S. – Bradley James Barton, 35, of Pugwash, was recently sentenced in Amherst provincial court to almost five years custody, 58-months and 15 days, after pleading guilty to 18 charges.
The sentence follows an incident whereby Barton crashed a stolen pick-up truck on March 3 in Oxford Junction.
Two volunteer firefighters, a husband and wife, came upon the scene and stopped to help three people who were in the truck.
While they were helping them, the three people stole the volunteer firefighters Nissan Sentra, which was found in Amherst on March 8.
Following the incident, an arrest warrant was issued for Barton, and he was apprehended by the police on March 19 in Amherst.
Barton was sentenced in court to a total of 30-months custody after pleading guilty to six charges related to the March 3 incident.
He was sentenced to 24 months custody for stealing the Nissan Sentra, three months custody for having in his possession a pick-up truck of a value exceeding $5,000, knowing the vehicle was stolen, and to three more months for driving while disqualified from doing so.
He was also sentenced to a 30 day sentence, concurrent with other sentences, after pleading guilty to committing mischief by willfully damaging without legal justification or excuse the Nissan Sentra; stealing the dash camera from the Nissan Sentra, the value of which did not exceed $5,000; and for failing without lawful excuse to comply with a condition to be at his residence at all times.
The incidents occurred March 3, 2019, in Oxford Junction.
Barton was also sentenced to another 28-months custody after pleading guilty to the following 12 crimes:
Barton was sentenced 90-days custody, 45 of which are already served, consecutive to other sentences, for failing to comply with a condition of house arrest by not being present at his home.
The incident occurred between Feb. 7, and March 1, 2019, in Pugwash.
Barton was also sentenced to 16-months custody, consecutive to other sentences, after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle in order to evade the police and failing without lawful excuse to stop the vehicle as soon as was reasonable under the circumstances.
He was also sentenced to 16-months custody, concurrent to other sentences, after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle on a public road in a manner that was dangerous to the public, and operating a motor vehicle while disqualified from doing so.
The three incidents occurred Oct. 14, 2018, on Main Street Oxford.
Barton was also sentenced to eight-months custody, consecutive with other sentences, after pleading guilty to operating an ATV while being pursued by a police officer in order to evade the police officer, and failing to stop the vehicle as soon as was reasonable in the circumstances.
He was also sentenced to eight-months custody, concurrent to other sentences, after pleading guilty to operating an ATV while disqualified from doing so.
The incidents occurred Sept. 21, 2018, on Waverley Street in Oxford.
The sentences from the crimes committed on Oct. 14, 2018, and Sept. 21, 2018, also include a five-year driving prohibition following his release from custody.
He was also sentenced to three-months custody, concurrent with other sentences, after pleading guilty to having a stolen vehicle in his possession, the value of which exceeded $5,000, and furthermore, for stealing the vehicle.
The truck was stolen in Tatamagouche and recovered in Conns Mills.
The incidents occurred Oct. 18, 2018.
