MIDDLE STEWIACKE, N.S. — An asbestos waste disposal project has been registered for environmental assessment.

On May 16, Colchester Containers Limited registered the project, which would be located on a 1.8 hectare-site along Highway 289 in Middle Stewiacke and have an expected operational life of 20 years.

Public comments on the project can be submitted until June 15, and the Nova Scotia minister of environment will decide, on or before July 5, whether the project will be approved.

If the project goes ahead, construction is expected to begin this summer

Middle Stewiacke residents are holding a meeting Friday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at the Middle Stewiacke United Church to address the issue.
