Make Way celebrates generosity of donors, supporters (Central NS)

NSCC Foundation fundraising campaign secures more than $33 million

When students succeed, we all succeed.

That was the driving force behind Nova Scotia Community College’s first-ever province-wide fundraising movement, Make Way — The Campaign for NSCC. It aimed to raise $25 million to support students, mainly through scholarships, bursaries and urgent aid, as well as innovative programming, leading-edge instructional equipment and centres of expertise.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, partners and supporters across Nova Scotia and beyond, Make Way has secured more than $33 million in contributions to help students on their NSCC journey.

The campaign experienced great success at NSCC’s local campuses — Cumberland, Truro and Pictou — through the volunteer work of community appeal committees comprising business leaders, community members and College employees.

Make Way celebrations held recently at these campuses attracted donors, community partners, volunteers, staff and students. Here’s a snapshot:

Paralegal Services student Disha Jaggi told attendees about the culture shock and financial challenges she experienced moving from India to Nova Scotia.

She said receiving the Bragg Family Access to Opportunities Bursary when entering her second year of studies was a huge relief.

“I was in tears to hear the great news,” she said. “I could go back to school now and be more focused academically.”

Clayton Daury, a Criminal Justice student, received the Truro Community Leadership Award, also made possible by donors to Make Way.

He had been struggling with living expenses, including vehicle repairs and gas needed to get to campus and to his work placement.

“Luckily for me, I was selected to receive this award — a bursary from another person within my community,” said Clayton.

Campaign Chair Rob Sobey said it meant a lot to be in his hometown talking about the success of Make Way and the generosity of donors and supporters in raising $33,097,542.

“These funds are already helping NSCC students at campuses across Nova Scotia, and will continue to do so for many years,” he said.

“I am humbled that people have rallied to the cause and have chosen to invest in students. Not only does this help students address very practical financial issues, it also gives them the confidence to achieve their dreams and build a stronger Nova Scotia.”

You are transforming Nova Scotia one learner at a time — and for that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
