The tasteless versions that you love to hate are long gone
From recipe development to food styling, Kathy lives for food.
Gone are the days of the tasteless soy-based veggie burger, sometimes the sole vegetarian offering at a restaurant. These days many local restaurants take pride in offering a veggie burger that is packed with flavour, enticing even meat lovers. Here are five local veggie burgers to sink your teeth into this weekend.
1. Ace Burger Co.
It’s no wonder the reigning champ of Halifax’s best burger puts as much effort into their vegetarian offering. While many versions have graced their menu over the years, this veganversion is a taste explosion: an electric beet patty, green goddess hummus, shoots, sprouts and pickled veggies, all on an herb focaccia bun.

2. Darrell’s Restaurant
Darrell’s has long been a favourite among burger lovers in the city, especially for their famed peanut butter burger. It’s no surprise vegetarians love their burgers, too. Their house-made veggie burger is topped with salsa, Monterey Jack, lettuce, tomato, mayo and jalapenos. It’s the ultimate Tex Mex burger.

The double cheeseburger at local vegan hot spot enVie is in a category all its own. The towering all-vegan burger includes two seitan patties, cheese, shiitake bacon, pickles, red onion and ketchup — 100 per cent classic cheeseburger flavour but 100 per cent plant based.

Downtown’s Krave Burger takes burgers seriously and their veggie burger is no different. Their homemade southwest inspired patty of lentils, sweet potatoes, corn and black beans is delicious on its own but it’s the tomato jam that puts it over the top.

Their Return of the Mac may just be my favourite veggie burger in the city. It’s easy to guess what it was modelled after with two veggie patties, special sauce, pickles and onions on a brioche bun. Suffice it to say, they nailed it.
