Truro-area youth prepare to give back to theatre program

Jane and Michael Banks are astounded as Mary Poppins continues to remove things from her "empty" bag. Mary Poppins Jr is on stage at the Marigold Cultural Centre July 19-21.
The Marigold Youth Spotlight Theatre staged Mary Poppins last year, with Cailean Clements playing Michael Banks. This month he’s performing in a fundraiser for the theatre program.

Cailean Clements feels Spotlight Theatre has done so much for him, he wants to give back.
He’s one of the people sharing their talents at Sing!, a musical fundraiser for the theatre program.
“My passion and love for theatre started there and it gave me the tools I needed to perform,” said the Grade 10 Cobequid Educational Centre student. “I made great friends and connections through it.
“Last summer was my seventh year with Spotlight Theatre and it was one of the biggest for me. I got to play a lead character – Michael Banks in Mary Poppins – and all shows were sold out.”
Brenna Conrad is directing the fundraising concert.
“I wanted to give the young people something to work toward that would let them give back and use their talents,” she said. “There are about 18 taking part and most have been involved with Spotlight.
“They’re very excited. It’s all musical theatre music and there will be costumes.”
The show includes solos, duets, quartets and one mass number that will be performed.
“There is a great chance for prospective Spotlight members to see what it is,” said Conrad. “The funds raised allow for extra programming and enables the hiring of staff.”
Clements will sing Mrs. Remington from Story of My Life and will be part of a quarter performing Friend Like Me from Aladdin.
He hopes to have a summer job this year, so he’s decided to help out as stage crew instead of performing in this year’s shows.
“I don’t know what I’ll be doing in the future, but musical theatre will remain very dear to my heart,” he said.
Rachel O’Brien is the pianist for the show.
Sing!’ will be held at the Marigold Cultural Centre on Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door.
This year’s Marigold Youth Spotlight Theatre will run July 2-18, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Participants, age 10 to 18, will stage Getting to know... The Sound of Music, a smaller version of the classic.
