Song, dance, cross-dressing, slapstick, colourful costumes and audience participation will come together for a show at the Dal AC Alumni Theatre this fall.
A Christmas pantomime version of Sleeping Beauty, written by Linda Finnie, and directed by Beth Terry and Linda Finnie, will be staged Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
“I thought about writing a pantomime for a long time,” said Finnie. “I started writing and it just seemed to flow. I’m quite excited now.
“I think this will be a lot of fun. It’s interactive and children can really get involved, while there’s lots of innuendo for the adults.”
Finnie has written plays, short stories and articles for historical magazines before, but this is her first panto.
“I have to put some songs in it, and I want things kids can sing along with,” she said.
Beth Terry has been involved with several plays and musicals, but this is the first time she’s worked on a panto.
“I remember seeing one, as a child, in Newfoundland, and I remember it being spectacular,” she said. “When Linda brought the idea to me, it was too exciting to turn down. There’s nothing I like better than putting music, theatre and children together.
“I read the first couple of scenes and I was roaring.”
There will be both matinees and evening performances of the show.
Pantomimes are usually based on traditional fairy tales, with a few changes made. They are usually performed around the Christmas season in the UK.
Pantos include physical comedy, double entendre, and over the top costumes and acting. Characters ask audience members to do things like let them know if someone is sneaking up behind them, or booing the villain. Everyone is also encouraged to join in the singing.
