At this time last year, Kolee Bakker had never painted a picture; now she’s preparing to show her work in an art gallery.

Bakker is one of the people whose work will be included in the Lead With Your Heart art show at the NSCC’s McCarthy Gallery.

“I started over from scratch and this is a whole new world for me,” she said. “To be in a group with 10 other women and be accepted; that in itself is amazing.”

Bakker started participating in the art program in May 2018, when it first started, and now also paints at home.

“When I’m doing art I completely zone out and don’t hear anything,” she said. “It puts me in a head space that’s so comforting.

“It’s a healthy way to let anxiety and stress out.”

She said she’s come a long way in a short time and her journey has been very positive, thanks to the people she chooses to surround herself with.

She’s contributing eight paintings to the show.

Laurie Dobbs White, one of the founding leaders of LWYH, said one of the group’s aims was to incorporate art into their programming and she’s thrilled that it’s led to a show.

Art program leader Jackie Waugh arranged the show after someone she knows at the NSCC suggested the idea.

“People can show anonymously if they like, and they can put things up for sale if they like,” she said. “We don’t know yet how many will take part or how many paintings there will be, but I think it’s really exciting.”

Paintings will go on the walls on Feb. 4 and a grand opening will take place on Feb. 11 from 2-4 p.m. Art work will remain on display until the end of February.

LWYH’s art program runs for four-week periods and will be starting up again soon.
